Program Schedule/Calendar
Spring match interns: Foundational Practices in Nutrition and Dietetics begins on Zoom in late spring (usually June), then continues with a five-day in-person gathering Washington in July or early August. The interns should plan to begin their first supervised practice rotation in August.
Full-time interns who start in August and complete 30-32 hours a week should finish by the end of March. Part-time interns will discuss their schedules with the internship director. It is possible for interns with Credit for Prior Learning to finish earlier.
Fall match interns: Interns meet on-line for Foundational Practices in Nutrition and Dietetics starting in January/February. This course will meet online for three hours a session, for nine sessions. There will be about five hours worth of readings, videos, and individual and group assignments BEFORE each class meeting.
Full time interns who start in January and complete 30-32 hours a week should finish by the end of September. Part-time interns will discuss their schedules with the internship director. It is possible for interns with Credit for Prior Learning to finish earlier.
Start Date: The interns' official start date begins the first day the Foundations course. Interns can do their supervised practice rotations in the order of their choosing.
** Holidays or breaks are not incorporated into the program calendar/schedule.** Intern should speak with their preceptors about scheduled national/local holidays and vacations in advance of beginning their rotation to allow time to plan for these missed days of supervised practice, when needed. Interns should not schedule a vacation in the middle of any of their rotations, without preceptors' prior approval. We advised that interns schedule a few days or a week long break between each rotation to allow time to make-up any scheduled hours missed and to prepare for the next rotation.
Recommended Rotation Hours (Click on any rotation below to view the description of recommended activities done in that rotation)
Clinical Rotation 300 (required)
Community Rotation 250
Food Service Management Rotation 230
Capstone Rotation 200
Internship Director Supervised ALT learning Activities 20 hours
Total: 1000 hours
This distance internship program includes flexibility for interns to design their own schedule. We will have online class on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month from 9:30 - 11:30 AM (Pacific Time Zone). Keep this in mind when creating a schedule with preceptors, as these hours do not count as supervised practice. The full-time track is expected to complete a minimum of 1000 supervised practice within nine months of Orientation/On-Site, and the part-time track within 14 months. In addition to time spent at their rotation site, the intern is expected to spend 4 -12 hours a week on internship assignments outside of their supervised practice. We recommend an intern to go to supervised practice on Mondays through Thursdays, leaving their Fridays free for GTTN meetings and assignments.
It is suggested that interns in the full-time track schedule 30-32 hours a week onsite with their preceptors. Part time interns may choose to do fewer hours a week, or take more time "off" between rotations.
In the event of an unavoidable absence or other delay, the intern should communicate directly to their preceptor in the manner the preceptor prefers (phone/email/text) as soon as possible. The intern must also email their internship director.
Leave of Absences may be granted due to:
Contact the internship director as soon as possible if these situations arise. Maximum leave available for full time students is four months, six months for part-time students. There is no financial penalty for leaves.
More information is available in the Handbook.
