Garden to Table Nutrition Dietetic Internship is designed to accommodate a variety of interns. Interns with a strong academic background, interns with strong work experience in the nutrition field, and interns who had strong clinical experiences may qualify for credit for prior learning. Evaluation of credit for prior experience will look at the type of work done, the level of performance, the CRDNs accomplished and the ability of the internship director to verify those experiences.

If an intern thinks they have experience that may qualify as part of one or more of their rotations, they can refer to the Credit for Prior Experience form for guidance about credit for prior experience. The application template is used for the assessment for prior learning. Interns submit their completed application template to the internship director. The internship director reviews the submitted template and verifies the provided information. To determine if any of the experiences will be granted credit for prior learning, the internship director looks at which CRDNs have been accomplished and which environments the intern has been exposed to decide if any hours/rotations would be shortened.

If credit is provided, that intern’s hours, including those for related rotation(s) are adjusted accordingly. The credit for prior learning is determined by the number and complexity of CRDNs completed and the relevance of the experience obtained, not to exceed 500 hours.

Remember, an internship is a fantastic place to learn and grow.  An intern with strong relevant experience may not want to shorten their time because they might miss out on opportunities to explore career options and  gain professional contacts. Once an intern begins working as an RD, it is unlikely they will have access to the wide variety and quality of mentorship that a preceptor can provide.

Example: An intern spent a year working at WIC where she met eight CRDNs, and two years as a Meal Site Manager for a Congregate meal program where she met eight CRDNs. As they have already accomplished 15 out of 43 CRDNs at above entry-level competency, their total supervised practice hours could be reduced. If the intern gets credit for 15 out of the 43 CRDNs, they may receive the following reduction in Supervised Practice Hours 1000 x (15/43), up to 349 hours. In order to decide which rotations to shorten, the internship director will look at which CRDNs have been accomplished and which environments the intern has been exposed to. In this example, the Community rotations and Food Service rotations could be shortened by a combined total of 420 hours, if this is agreeable to the preceptors.
